DIFFERENT SHAPES OF BRICK

DIFFERENT SHAPES OF BRICK

Following are such few shapes of bricks:

1. BULLNOSE BRICK-
A brick moulded with a round angle is termed as a bullnose brick. It is used for rounded quoin. A connection which is formed when a wall takes a turn is known as a quoin.

2. CHANNEL BRICK-
These bricks are moulded to the shape of a gutter or a channel and they are very often glazed. The channel bricks are used for drainage purpose.

3. COPING BRICK-
These types of bricks are made to suit the thickness of wall on which coping is to be provided. These are used as top most course to give a nice appearance and easy drainage of water. The chamfered, half- round and saddle back are some coping bricks.

4. COWNOSE BRICK
A brick moulded with double bullnose on end is known as a cownose brick. It is also called double bullnose bricks.

5. CURVED SECTOR BRICK-
These types of bricks are in the form of curved sector. These bricks are used for construction of circular brick masonry pillars, chimneys etc.

6. HOLLOW BRICK-
These bricks are also known as cellular or cavity bricks. They have well defined set of cavities with specified dimensions made in the body of bricks. They are light in weight about one-third the weight of the solid bricks of the same size. Wall thickness of such bricks about 20 mm to 25 mm. These can be laid almost about four times as fast as the ordinary bricks. They reduce the transmission of heat, sound and damp. These are ideally suited for the construction of non load bearing/ partition walls.

7. PAVING BRICK-
These types of bricks are prepared from a clay containing a higher amount of iron. The excess of iron vitrifies the bricks at a low temperature. These bricks mechanically shaped and not hand moulded. Its compressive strength not less then 400 kg/cm2 and their dimensions are 19.5x9.5x9 cm and 19.5x9.5x4 cm. They should not absorbed water more than 5% of their weight on 24 hours of immersion in water. Such bricks resist better abrasive action of traffic. These bricks may be plane or chequered. Paving bricks extensively used for garden walks, street pavements, stable floors etc.

8. PERFORATED BRICK-
These bricks contain cylindrical holes throughout their thickness. It is done by pushing iron bars through the brick at the time of moulding. These bricks are light in weight and require less quantity of clay for their preparation. These bricks should be free from cracks, flaws and nodules of free lime. Their face should be plane, uniform, rectangular, uniform colour and texture. Their dimensions are 19x9x9 cm and 29x9x9 cm. The compressive strength should not be less than 7 N/mm2 on gross area. The water absorption should not exceed 15% by weight after immersion for 24 hours in water. The perforation may be circular, square, rectangular of any other shape. Perforation area should not exceed 30-45 % of the area of face. These are unfit to be used in hydraulic structures.

9. PURPOSE MADE BRICK-
These are bricks of special shape and size made to suit a particular requirement. These bricks are usually more costly than the ordinary bricks. But they ensure quicker and cleaner construction as no cutting to shape is involved.
